The Centurions Power Extreme Mini Series
Once again the Warner Archi tommy hilfiger ve has released another eighties cartoon series with The Centurions: Power Extreme (seen here on Warner Archive). This is not a collection of the 65 episodes but a mini series of the first 5 episodes. As a child of the eighties I always loved the 5 part mini series. It usually meant an introduction to the characters. It was also the hook to the qu tommy hilfiger est, struggle, goal, or task at hand for the show. Many times 5 part episodes would appear later in a series. Now I wasn na then or now not to know this was their big introduction to a whole new slew of toys and characters. Joe and Transformers were the masters of these episodes. What I found so utterly disappointing about this collection of The Centurions: Power Extreme is that there wasn a story arch for these first 5 episodes. Instead it was 5 complete unrelated adventures with the same characters.
I personally remember the last time I held a Centurion: Power Extreme figure in my hand. My grandmother, who never had much money, said I could have a figure from Kaybee Toys for helping her with the yard work. It came down to Jack Rockwell (the yellow land guy) from Centurions and Zak from The Sectaurs. Zak looked way cooler, came with a cool bug called Bitaur, and had a mini comic. Jack Rockwell had none of that. Sure I watched The Centurions, but much like Inhumanoids and Robotixs the episodes have become long forgotten. Warner Archive offered the mini series and I jumped at it.
For those of you who don remember, The Centurions: Power Extreme featured a team of individuals who fought for truth, justice, and in opposition to Doc Terror evil ways. Doc Terror (Ron Feinberg) and his evil cyborg minions are hell bent on taking over the world. Okay, so really nothing new and obviously without a toy line there really wouldn have been a cartoon. Joe and the Transformers, yet those product li tommy hilfiger nes featured characters that have endured; endured in multiple mediums and still endure despite horrific films made with their names attached. The heroes are the key. There is Ace McCloud (Neil Ross) our pilot, Max Ray (Pat Fraley) the underwater expert, and finally Jake Rockwell (Vince Edwards) our solider on the ground. In those first 5 episodes I wish I could tell you something more than that Ace is the ladies man, Max is the brains, and Jake has the dog. There wasn really anything to hold onto in terms of character. The danger was immediate but nothing we didn know they were going to get out of. As Doc Terror evil plans quickly fell to the way side, I found enjoyment in making what she said jokes. If only this would have been a mini series so that the story and characters could have developed. Sure, the Centurions would have defeated Doc Terror in the end but where was the journey? The comradery? These first 5 episodes didn really build on to one another, which meant the series really had no arc. In further research on the show, I discovered that there were a few 2 part episodes and the entire series wrapped with a 5 part story called or Machine Despite being the end of the series, it probably would have been far more entertaining than a cyborg Merman getting attacked by Jake Rockwell dog, Shadow.
Warner Archive seems to have the rights to a lot of the Hanna Barbera and Ruby Spears cartoons. What appears to be their approach is to test the waters with these discs to see if the public is interested. I watched the (actual) GoBot mini series a few months back (see column) and was entertained. There was actually a story and character development and the ride, for the most part, was fun. Centurions: Power Extreme was as if I was watching a 24 minute commercial for a toy that even as a kid had little to no appeal for me.
Now I wonder if Dino Riders is out there somewhere on DVD?
